M1 Pacific Motorway (Varsity Lakes to Tugun) Upgrade – constructing environmental resilience

Rick Haywood has been a Senior Environmental Officer with the Department of Transport and Main Roads for the past nine years. He has ensured State and Federal legislation, and TMR policies and procedures have been applied to support the delivery of numerous road infrastructure development projects. He has been able to apply his extensive environmental knowledge to these projects, including during the design and delivery the M1 Pacific Motorway Upgrade between Varsity Lakes and Tugun.

Melinda Scanlon is an experienced Fisheries Scientist with over 15 years of expertise in fish passage, aquatic habitat rehabilitation, and project management. Mel has collaborated extensively in Australia and internationally with government agencies, councils, consulting engineers, and infrastructure owners, guiding projects through design, assessment, approvals, implementation, and monitoring phases. Being passionate about ecological outcomes and effective collaboration, Mel brings both technical expertise and strategic leadership to advancing aquatic connectivity and habitat restoration.
