Innovations in Sustainable and High-Performance Bitumen Emulsion Technologies

Author: Hamidreza Sahebzamani

In the current global context, where environmental sustainability is paramount, the asphalt industry is compelled to innovate and adapt. The reduction of carbon footprint in asphalt pavement construction and maintenance has become a critical objective. This presentation presents the advancements made by SAMI in the development of sustainable emulsion technologies with a focus on performance and sustainability.

SAMIbond 007 is a rapid-setting, polymer-modified bitumen emulsion tailored for high-stress areas like airports and main roads. It ensures superior bonding and fatigue performance, with trackless properties that maintain the integrity of the flexible and composite pavement during construction. Laboratory and field studies underline its exceptional shear strength and quick breaking and curing times, elevating productivity.

SAMIBioPrime represents a breakthrough in bitumen emulsions, being free from petroleum solvents and incorporating vegetable-derived oils. Its fast penetration into base courses and the elimination of cure time allows for expedited layer applications. This innovation approaches carbon neutrality and enhances safety by eliminating VOC-related risks, showcasing its eco-friendly profile.

SAMIFloat is an innovative high-float emulsion that negates the need for heating or the use of petroleum cutters. Its polymer-enhanced gel structure enhances adhesion and reduces aggregate loss. By providing a versatile, environmentally friendly solution for road surfacing, SAMIFloat demonstrates superior durability and adaptability in various pavement treatments.

Collectively, these technologies represent commitments to environmental stewardship and its proactive approach to sustainable asphalt pavement solutions, setting a new benchmark for the future of the industry.
