Bridge Behaviour Under Thermal Differentials: Insights from TMR

Duncan Ward is a Principal Engineer in Engineering Technology, Structures at TMR. He specialises in how bridges respond to real traffic loading, with a focus on structural behaviour, performance assessment, and the practical application of engineering mechanics. Duncan has a strong interest in bridge instrumentation and monitoring, using data from sensors and field measurements to understand in‑service behaviour and to improve the reliability of condition assessments.

His work supports evidence‑based decisions for bridge management, load rating, and asset performance. Duncan is particularly engaged in advancing TMR’s capability in bridge and traffic monitoring, including long‑term data collection, analysis methods, and the integration of monitoring outcomes into routine engineering practice and asset planning.

He is recognised for translating complex structural responses into clear, actionable engineering insights. Duncan continues to promote the use of monitoring technologies to improve confidence in structural performance and to support safer, more efficient management of Queensland’s bridge network.
