In the infrastructure development industry, the merging of cutting-edge surveying technologies has revolutionised traditional spatial data capture, analysis and methods of consumption. This presentation explores the transformative impact of integrating piloted, fixed wing Aerial LiDAR and Imagery with Mobile and Terrestrial laser scanning techniques in supporting the complex design requirements of level crossing removals, road/rail, and other infrastructure projects.
Low altitude Aerial LiDAR and imagery, renowned for its rapid data acquisition capabilities over vast areas, offers unparalleled benefits in capturing design accuracy data over whole project influence zones. When coupled with laser scanning of the streets and precincts around a project (with a vehicle mounted system), this combined 3D dataset enables creation of a multitude of derived products to support varied consultant needs. The combination of LiDAR and imagery (both from the plane and vehicle systems enables outputs like traditional geospatial mapping (vector), 3D city modelling, visualisation tools and other geospatial products.
Considering the rapid data capture techniques these methods are generally covert and can be conducted with next to no public knowledge, no disruption to public or business activities and capture data over public land, private property and in otherwise unreachable areas.
A couple of real-world case studies (level crossing removals and a rail construction project) will be presented demonstrating the capture and outputs and highlighting the benefits of integrating aerial and ground-based LiDAR technologies.
By embracing these advanced methodologies project teams and allied consultants are accelerating design timelines and ultimately designing with a more complete understanding of the whole of project spatial constraints.
