Implementation of Contractor Initiated Asphalt Mix Design Innovations on TMR projects

Author: Jason Jones

Asphalt mixes that are supplied to Transport and Main Roads (TMR) projects must be submitted for registration prior to use. Mix design registration has historically been limited to mixes that fully conform with TMR specification requirements. To help facilitate the trialling and use of suitable Contractor proposed innovations on TMR projects, Engineering & Technology Branch of TMR introduced a new process in 2020 that facilitates the registration of asphalt mix designs that do not fully conform with specification requirements but align with the Department’s strategic objectives.

This presentation will outline the methodology TMR uses to:

  • assessment the suitability of a Contractor’s non-standard mix design for registration, and
  • ensure the performance risk associated with implementation of the innovation is appropriately managed.

A range of case studies, demonstrating the successful implementation of the non-standard mix designs on projects, will also be discussed.
