Improving safety in a roundabout way: Learnings from the Moores Creek Road, Feez Street and Kerrigan Street intersection upgrade

Author: Colin Edmonston

The Moores Creek Road, Feez Street and Kerrigan Street roundabout is a major intersection on the Rockhampton Regional Council (RRC) network with a long-running crash history, including 21 killed or seriously injured (KSI) crashes in the ten years preceding 2017. An analysis of these crashes and non-injury/property damage only crash descriptions provided by Queensland Police Service (QPS) through the Regional Road Safety Committee informed a successful RRC Blackspot nomination in 2018. The works involved conversion of the existing two-lane roundabout into a turbo configuration with channelisation to address the predominant crash types – ‘side swipe’ and ‘through right’ crashes at the conflict point on the Feez Street western leg exit.

As a relatively new treatment for regional Queensland, this paper documents the rationale behind the geometric changes to the layout of the roundabout, as well as impact on safety outcomes and capacity and queuing metrics post-implementation. Finally, the paper describes an innovative communications approach used to generate community support.
