Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) Ferry Terminal Construction & Delivery
The Southern Moreton Bay Islands Ferry Terminals Upgrade project is a jointly funded $48.6 million project, with the Queensland Government contributing $31.5 million and Redland City Council contributing $17.1 million.
TMR and Council has worked in partnership to deliver new ferry terminals at Russell, Macleay, Lamb, and Karragarra islands in consultation with island communities, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, SeaLink, and other key stakeholders.
The modern design has provided much-needed safety improvements for TransLink’s ferry customers benefiting from the larger, accessible pontoon and waiting areas.
The new terminals accommodate future growth in passenger numbers by providing additional berths and terminals designed for projected passenger numbers. Passenger embarking and disembarking times and ferry idle time due to berth congestion have both been greatly reduced.
Recreational boaties have gained four new pontoon facilities by repurposing the existing ferry terminals; locals and visitors to the islands can utilise the dedicated recreational boating pontoons for fishing and mooring, with commercial and recreational users now separated.
Planning for the project commenced in 2014. Nine years of planning, consultation, design, and construction phases with successful completion in late 2023.
Key features of the upgrade works include:
larger waiting areas with more seating; significantly improved weather protection; wider gangways and enhanced circulation spaces
exceeding the requirements of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002
duel berthing pontoons and new amenities blocks for Russell and Macleay islands, and new landside shelters at all four sites
security cameras to improve passenger safety, solar panels, smart lighting and remote lighting control systems; digital timetable information
larger pontoons to accommodate future passenger growth
unique Quandamooka artwork on screening
new and repurposed existing jetty and gangway elements for recreational boating and fishing.
