TMR Research and trials of use of recycled materials in road construction

Author: Meera Creagh

TMR has committed to be an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable organisation that plans, delivers and manages a transport system that connects Queensland now and in the future.

TMR has partnered with NTRO to undertake research and field trials of use of recycled materials in road construction; and provide the specification framework to ensure quality and durability requirements of infrastructure are also achieved. Two research projects are underway; assessing laboratory and field performance of:

  • Stabilisation of recycled material blends for use in pavement applications
  • Use of recycled materials in earthworks and drainage

Waste materials assessed as part of the research and field trials include:

  • Construction and Demolition Waste/Rubble such as concrete, brick, and concrete washout
  • Recycled Glass
  • Recovered Pavements materials (including granular and stabilised material as well as asphalt that is not suitable for reuse into those applications)

Both projects have undertaken laboratory testing; and have now partnered with Districts to undertake to three field trials:

  • North Coast District – Stabilised Type 2.1 Recycled Crushed Concrete as a base layer on the Brisbane Valley Highway
  • Metropolitan District – Recycled Asphalt Profilings in Earthworks on Cleveland Redland Bay Road
  • Metropolitan District – Recycled Crushed Concrete Backfill on Northern Transitway

The presentation will cover the laboratory testing results, field trial progress; and specifications; and highlight opportunities to increase use of recycled materials in road construction to contribute towards TMR’s sustainability goals.
