TMR’s Network Safety Plans

The spatial dataset that represents Queensland’s roads is a strategic asset for TMR and it is at the centre of digitisation efforts for TMR and Queensland Government. Authoritative road data is critical for many use cases across Queensland, including enhancing road safety, enabling service delivery and supporting economic efficiency.

Datasets about Queensland’s state-controlled roads are maintained within TMR, representing an important, but only partial representation of the transport network. TMR also licences commercial data to represent the entire road network in Queensland, including council and private roads.

The TMR Spatial Strategy 2020-2025 includes the Principle of “The Definitive Network”, which is defined as a multi-level collection of data accurately representing the Queensland Transport Network. The vision for TMR’s Definitive Network is for the transport network data to be trusted as the best available for any given geographic area within Queensland, and for that data to be available for any user unless restrictions are required on some parts of the data.

TMR has recently commenced work with the Department of Resources (DoR) to ensure DoR’s Queensland Roads and Tracks dataset meets TMR’s needs in the short term and develops to meet broader Queensland community needs into the future.

Over time, TMR and DoR will build the data and tools to capture essential Definitive Network datasets, capture changes in the data as they occur in the real world, and deliver a quality framework (including quality assurance tools) to provide users with an understanding of data quality.

This presentation will discuss the Definitive Network concept and the work that will bring it to fruition.
