CADD Tools – Exploring technology to improve data quality and enrich user experience

Author: Sudharsanan Loganathan

There is a state government mandate to reach digital by default by 2032.  Digital by default means moving from paper-based data to data in digital format.  TMR has committed to this mandate by implementing a range of digital engineering initiatives including Building Information Modelling on major projects.  However, to achieve digital by default, TMR needs to transition to a business-as-usual digital and cultural approach across all projects and assets.

The CADD Systems team within the Road Design unit provides guidance, expert services, support and advice on all Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) related topics on behalf of TMR covering the full transport infrastructure delivery process.

CADD Systems team has been involved in the implementation of Digital Engineering initiatives and has been developing and improving a range of CADD software tools to support the creation of BIM models. Some of these tools and initiatives include:

  • Adoption of BuildingSMART open source “Industry Foundation Class” (IFC) file format.
  • Influencing BuildingSMART in the development of bridge schema in their open source “Industry Foundation Class” (IFC) standards
  • Culvert 7 program
  • VPath 4 program
  • Signs macro
  • Chevron macro
  • Updating TMR 12d Customisation package to simplify inserting attributes into BIM models and embedding them during the design authoring process.

The team proposes to present an overview of the above mentioned items via live demos and worked examples to demonstrate how such tools can be used to produce richly attributed BIM models more effectively and easily.
