Connected Vehicle Data – changing the reference point

Author: Adam Wilmot

For the first time it is possible to measure driver behaviour (including acceleration, swerving and braking) on a network without installation of physical equipment or the use of bespoke vehicles.

Without reliance on conventional traffic survey instruments at hundreds of site locations, data insights and performance information including accelerometer, gyroscope and road network GPS and connected vehicle data is made possible with IoT.

Department of Transport (VIC) and GHD leveraged this data to evaluate road safety treatments, driver responses and behaviour, while identifying high road safety risk areas. Looking at road safety across three levels – single installation, whole of street and whole of neighbourhood – the project successfully demonstrated a significant overall risk reduction in the neighbourhood as well as benefits from individual treatments and applications. This multidisciplinary approach including data scientists, geospatial analysts, and traffic engineers pivots the road safety perspective from a fixed asset to the road user while developing new metrics and delivering greater insights.
