Digital Engineering Delivering Benefits for the Coomera Connector Stage 1 Central Project

Project Background: The Coomera Connector, extends for 45km between the Logan Motorway and the Pacific Motorway Interchange at Loganholme and Nerang-Broadbeach Road in Nerang. Once delivered, Coomera Connector will cater for regional population and employment growth, relieve pressure on the Pacific Motorway M1 by reducing its use for local trips, and improve safety and travel time reliability for inter-regional trips including those between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Abstract: Embedding Digital Engineering into the project delivery process is consistent with the EIT [BL1] Forum’s mission to foster greater collaboration and showcase innovation within Queensland’s transport sector. The project highlights the integration of various disciplines and topics emphasised by the forum, such as digital engineering, project delivery, construction planning and technological advancements, all of which are pivotal to enhancing the region’s transport infrastructure.

Collaborative [BL2] Innovation: The project is a prime example of collaborative innovation, with multiple stakeholders, including government, construction and industry representatives, coming together to leverage digital engineering practices.

Digital Engineering and BIM: The project’s emphasis on Digital Engineering and Building Information Modelling (BIM) resonates with the forum’s focus on digital technology and innovation. The routine use of the Federated model demonstrates a sophisticated application of BIM, serving as a benchmark for best practice.

Sustainability and Efficiency: The project contributes to sustainability and efficiency, core themes of the forum, using digital models to minimise errors, optimise design, greatly enhancing the change management process, and potentially reducing waste during construction, all contributing to a more sustainable approach to project delivery.  

Knowledge Sharing and Best Practices: The presentation aims to share learnings and experiences from the project, aligning with the forum’s objectives of disseminating knowledge and best practices. The discussion on overcoming challenges and leveraging technology to improve project delivery and construction planning, is particularly valuable for industry and government representatives looking to adopt similar innovative approaches.

Technological Integration: The project’s use of advanced data-rich 3d models, provides an intuitive interface for Designers, Engineers, Architects and Stakeholders enhancing communication and coordination to better serve such large-scale multidiscipline projects, and seeks to provide a shift from traditional documentation methods to a 3D certified model that reflects the forum’s theme of integrating the latest technologies in project delivery. Conclusion: The Coomera Connector Stage 1 Central project serves as an excellent case study that aligns with the EIT Forum’s goals of fostering innovation, collaboration, and learning. The presentation is positioned to offer valuable insights into the practical application of digital engineering, showcasing how these technologies can lead to a more efficient, sustainable, and collaborative approach to project delivery.
